Sleeping Beauty
Jan. 9th, 2003 11:55 pmSleeping Beauty at Young Vic (I shall not go into the horror of the trains on the way there). Fantastic production as always. There was lots of humour, and grisly bits (always necessary in presence of kiddywinks), with really cool costumes and staging. Ogres and childbirth and princes who "Er, don't think I'm cut out for this sort of thing", and fairies with tempers... Oh, and an interesting point - if you get rid of all the spindles, you can't have thread, so you can't make cloth or new clothes in the kingdom for 16 years. Singing! Princesses who are pretty but not gorgeous (often a thing in Young Vic productions) but definitely have personalities.
Best lines : When told about what he has to do, the prince who is worthy goes 'Fight through the barrier of thorns, get inside the castle and... kiss a girl? Ewww.'
His mother, an ogress (prince is half-ogre but doesn't know it, think's he's full human) says 'Have fun hunting and don't go off with any strange women.'
When they come back (after the interval), they've been gone long enough for Beauty to have twins. His mother's statement : "You've been gone rather a long time."
The 'Just Say No' to temptation song, using your mother's medication...
In some respects it's quite a bit more like the older versions of the fairytale, which is great, (Beauty having twins and the ogres being involved) but on the whole is fantastic. And every time the fairy does a spell (there's only one fairy) she lets loose a fart, and that's the original reason the rather fastidious queen doesn't let her into the naming ceremony.
