comics ramblings
Oct. 13th, 2002 04:27 pm:sigh: going through my Batman comics. Batman, Azrael, Catwoman, Robin, Detective Comics... Some I *really* don't want to sell, but at the same time they just sit around collecting dust. Warren Ellis made the best point ever when he was speaking about graphic novels - They're easier to read in one go, they're cheaper, they're more hard wearing and they're easier to pimp. I wish DC would collect all the Batman comics into novels, not just the special storylines. Because a lot of the one-shot or three-shot story arcs are gorgeous and so very well-written.
Am currently resisting the urge to get the new Catwoman series by Ed Brubaker. Will probably fail in this urge. Ed Brubaker. Writer of one of the best minis ever - Scene of the Crime. Of which I jealously covet my issues.
Looking at the current trend going through comics of noir and ordinary people. This is a good thing. http://sequentialtart.com has points about this in its Ed Brubaker interview. There's a swing away from spandex - people aren't as interested in garish costumes anymore, especially first-time readers. (This is why the Bat shall always reign supreme - garish is not of the Bat) A lot of the new stuff you see, the characters may have powers, but they're wearing normal clothes and definitely not calling themselves silly names. Think Buffy and Smallville for this trend. There's periphery books in the X-Men where the story's focused on normal people, or FBI agents, or cops who have to deal with all the fallout created by the superheroes, and they make fantastic stories. Villain of the week isn't necessary.
Oh. My. God. Marcia on Sequential Tart has just proposed best. casting. decision EVER. John Constantine, Hellblazer - Sean Bean. Why didn't I ever think of this? He's the right age, right looks, right attitude - accent can be modified easily. As we'll never get Sting (who John Constantine is modelled on, looks-wise) this would be wondrous. BBC. Channel 4. The time is ripe for a grimy horror series, it really is...
On my back, Charley, Lou and Megs are proposing we go as Gotham Girls for End of Days next year. Charley as Harley Quinn, Lou as Catwoman, Megs as Batgirl, and I was informed that I would be going as Poison Ivy. Because I have the curves, hair and body language. I'm just quietly shuddering over trying to find a leotard/bodice that'll be the right shape, not to mention sewing on all those leaves. You're talking to the queen of 'costumes made of pieces I already have'. help.
