The weekend
Apr. 14th, 2003 02:07 pmReporting on the weekend. Aside from LOTR viewing, there were some nice meals - discovery of a decent pizzeria opposite the Young Vic as the Meson Don Felipe was packed out, and the Archduke near the South Bank. The blokes had a habit of sticking their fingers in their ears whenever slash was mentioned. This happened to be quite often since most of the girls were slash addicts, though I appear to be the only real multi-fandom whore as most of the ones I met were SG-1 personae. Though our rallying cry is, of course,
minkboylove's Dr Daniel Jackson's Diaries. I even managed to make Sarah choke on her coffee in Victoria station by mentioning 'the Lady of the Lube' and the bet on who exactly made the prostate moan in that fic. Heh. Then add some discussions on hobbit hierarchy and behaviour (not of the slash nature) and constantly waking Ming up in the cinema and feeding him chocolate covered coffee beans to keep him awake that little bit longer.
Spent time on Saturday in the gay veggie cafe First Out off Tottenham Court Road with
rozk and
dolores where war was discussed, as was the slashiness of the Bill at the moment, which is apparently a hotbed of subtext and Smallville-like surface text. See Heather sit there ever-so-slightly bemused as I don't watch it. But me loves them. Before then it was Forbidden Planet with Ming and David, looking and drooling and resisting buying graphic novels (trying to save money, or rather closet it away for EoD stuff and future DVD purchase). Also much scorning of likenesses of action figures. I'm sure at one point we said one of the TTT figures looked more like David Jason than who it was supposed to be. David also had to pry the large cuddly Wicket soft toy out of my arms a few times because I wouldn't let go of it. "Heather, you're not allowed to keep it. It's 55 quid and it's a tad hard to smuggle past security." Me: "But is Ewok! Want!" Post cafe, 'twas Camden - clothes shops, mocking of goth gear (I really can't help it), Ming groaning at the military fashions as he searched for obscure bits of proper combat gear in his quest for low-effort costuming, and a rather fabulous time in a costume shop. Hats! Hats of humiliation were tried on! Er, and then a cruising tour of the costumes upstairs and we've discovered that conventioning has really raised our sneering levels. Detail perfectionism has crept into our hind brains, and nearly every costume was decreed not nearly good enough and amateurish.
Watched the first 3 eps of Farscape and the body-swap one and am now officially an utter Farscape fan and convert. There are really no words for me to express my joy and fascination with this show. Ming chucked Season one at me before I left on Sunday for viewing before EoD.
At about 1:30 on Sunday we left the domain of Ming, and I travelled south of the river to see Steph in her and Natalie's new flat. Fabulous, spacious and trendy flat with fabulous bathrooms and kitchen. They were suffering from hangovers, so we adjourned to the local pub (fifteen yards from the front door) and spent three hours drinking and giggling. Have discovered the latest conversation stopper. "My friend had a hamster. It died." Cue way too many evil hamster jokes.
In other news, the Sci-Fi channel in the UK will be showing Firefly on Sundays from May 18th. Set your videos now and worship, all ye who have not been converted yet. We might even be getting to see the 3 eps not shown in the US... :rubs hands gleefully: Not to mention if it comes to DVD we'll be getting 'em first. Mwhahaha.
