Today, went to London to see [livejournal.com profile] mingmerciless for the day. Got in, went to the new Forbidden Planet, where we critiqued the statues, moved onto the LOTR figures where we critiqued resemblance to actors, and got into a discussion about all things LOTR and fandom with [livejournal.com profile] hugsnkisses_ who it turns out was at the premiere last night waith [livejournal.com profile] ponchki and [livejournal.com profile] celiaka. Gaaah. small world, considering I recognised the name from [livejournal.com profile] megolas's journal. And then Riley turned up who me and Ming know from cons... Geeked, I bought another copy of Lightning Strikes (second Stormwatch tpb of the Ellis run) as I was giving it to Ming for xmas and realised how much *I* needed it. God, it's official. Stormwatch Black and the Authority (pre Jenny-dying) are my One True Superhero Group. The, er, identifying with Jenny Sparks from the word go? Nothing to do with it, honest... :whistles innocently: Oh, and Ming may be encouraging me to do an Eowyn costume sometime. This is disturbing. White may suddenly become my default colour for costumes - Jenny Sparks, Jenavian from Farscape, Eowyn.... No sooner do I consign the all-black ones - Sally Bowles and Black Canary - to the 'wait a while before recycling them' bin, I suddenly get assaulted by another non-colour. Fear me, for I am monochrome girl.

From there we rounded the corner and went 'ooo, that costume shop is open' - Angel - walked in, attempted to go up the stairs and got stopped. Apparently you have to be shown round. We waited five minutes and then got a guided tour of all their costumes. Dear God. Costume geek heaven, I'm telling you. They hire them out to tv programs and film sets, too... Got a lot of ideas for stuff, including some gorgeous pieces of knitted chainmail and helmets. Ming was salivating over imperial robes.

Got into Gaucho's, in one of the arches off Oxford St, and mmm. Niiice Frozen Margharitas. Nice place, too - crowded, noisy, but great atmosphere and a South American restaurant, where I actually *chose* fish for once in my life after defaulting on the prawns - apparently they have been dodgy there before, and besides, I blanch a tad at shelling out thirty quid for a main course. Food bloody goreous. Perfect spinach, with half a tonne of lemon juice and garlic on it, plus yummy pancakes after.

However, let it not be said that Ming is not evil. After discussing Indiana Jones/Stargate crossovers, including how the Stargate got into American hands after being discovered by the Germans in the 20s - we've decided that we're talking a Werner Von Braun-style deal at the end of WWII - and that there's a fair chance Indy was at the opening of the Stargate in '53. And Indy on one of the SG-teams? 'That Fedora is not regulation issue. Nor is the whip.' Plus, of course, Daniel's issues with an archaeologst who's a graverobber who destroys every decent site he gets his hands on.

EDIT : Now he's positing that 'The Fifth Race', the 1953 test, wasn't the first one done, and in fact the Nazis got there first - forget South america, there's Space Nazis out there! Yes. We need to kill him.

Discussed fanfic - prevalence of SG-crossovers - X-Files, Highlander (he's surprised there's fairly few of the X-Files ones). Then discussed what the SG reaction was to Mulder. In that 'Can we keep our stories straight on what we're cooking up to keep that man off track? Janet, *why* did you have to post those autopsy pictures of the Asgard on Usenet? You're tormenting him again. Daniel, off Usenet. Now.' vein we carried for a bit, then the evil one hit. Truly. Fucking. Evil. It's not even a crossover....

Ming suggested exactly why Blair is being a doormat to Dubya. He's wangled a place on the SG program for a British team. Which means they have access to the tech and intel. The *bastard*. We extrapolated from there on the horrific culture clash ensuing from there with the advent of SG-UK...

'Will someone tell me why SG-UK is back two hours early from their mission?'
'Footie's on in an hour.'

'With all due respect, Colonel O'Neill, wouldn't you find that your negotiations with the native would go better if you took your sunglasses off?' (For all who don't get this one - it's a major point in the British approach to dealing with any natives, and is included in one of the recruitment adverts. First thing the Brits did in Iraq was take off their sunglasses and helmets to put the locals more at ease, thus appearing more human and accessible)

From Gen. Hammond to Major R. Carruthers : Your men have been heard requesting 'fags' from the other soldiers and officers, as well as asking where they can find them. May I remind you that the US Military operates a 'don't ask ,don't tell' policy?

The plot bunnies appear to be mutating and growing and breeding and look very likely to become a collaboration fic...

Oh, and cruising the Apple trailers site, and my god, I'm actually looking forward to Dirty Dancing : Havana Nights (shut up, it looks perfectly sweet and lovely and has Cuban music. As well as an actress I rather like). But that's not the bad thing. I'm actually looking forward to a Woody Allen film. I think it's the presence of Christina Ricci that's seducing me. *Bad* Christina Ricci. Plus, also rather looking forward to the modern-day interpretation of The Snow Queen that's being trailed on Sky for Xmas.

Which in this case, was giving myself a kick up the arse to phone that bloke and say 'Hi, sorry, I've decided that though I like you, I don't like you like you, so it'd be unfair to lead you on. Cancelling date.' Fortunately he took it well, though he did whine 'but I thought you liked me!' me : 'Yeah, but not enough.' Guess cliches have their place.... Instead on Sunday night I shall do something I'm far more looking forward to, which is pizza and Master and Commander.

Debating whether to book tickets for ROTK on Friday, as I don't think I could cope with a 9:30 showing on a work night, and friday's the only one left with showing at 7-ish or so...

In othr news, the works piss-up has been postponed to later this week or next saturday due to two of the cast being too hungover to attempt it.
