Hi, this is our product. Wanna buy?
May. 15th, 2007 02:11 pmDe-stressed slightly. Ming, you have until Wednesday. C'mon, how awesome would it be to wear your re-enactment gear for military night? (also, reminder to look for silk scarf)
Kicked arse out of bed this morning to go jogging and started sit-ups the night before. I won't get toned in two weeks, but it'll be something. And I might even have run a tiny bit of the jiggly bits off. (the simple equation of 'does it need toning?' is : painfully jiggly when exercising = not toned)
Costumes :
Father Ted night - Housewife with v. hairy baby. Now I just need to find a doll.
Military - Diane Holmes if I can find a silk scarf and tan trews. Otherwise it's search for the overalls and go as ground crew.
Dale Arden - find a white jacket in charity/ebay, get red cloth from shepherds bush and make shirt dress.
Jedi Chef - if the material gets here on time, make the robe. If not, borrow Kurgan's.

liviapenn is discussing how the comics industry looks from outside. Which is not good. Especially if they want new readers. And the realisation of how desensitised we are to it. I know I make jokes about how desensitised me and my workmates are to surgical and medical stuff, but... that's necessary and important work it's related to. I'm desensitised to nudity due to being a) an art student, and b) a seamstress. Working up close and personal with the human body tells you skin is just skin. You're not supposed to accept fetish porn as the norm, or be embarassed to be seen reading stuff in public because of the *artwork*. The image most people have of comics is the superhero stuff, which is 90% T&A. And the comic industry wonders why people don't want to be seen in their shops? Seriously. Look at the stuff that sells in the normal bookshops : Vertigo. Watchmen. Preacher. Transmet. Those gorgeous Batman noir AUs. Not superhero T & A, you'll note. They ask why there are so few female, or even normal adult readers. Maybe they should start asking why people don't want to be seen in their shops first. Because it's a bit difficult to get people to buy your product when they won't even cross the threshold.
brown_betty says it better.
They can tell us about characterisation and good stories until they're blue in the face; what they're forgetting is that humans? Primarily visual creatures. The good characterisation kind of gets cancelled out by being hit in the face with the T & A everytime they turn a page. So they go to other formats that they can get equally good characterisation in. You want new readers? Don't alienate the casual browsers with the packaging.
