someone give this a once over, will you?
Dec. 10th, 2003 09:46 pmGetting off my arse and writing essays for IBE and DW. Possibly also Big Sexy Man, too... Next up, Wes and his dad. But
megolas is being cowardly and telling me that she needs sleep before an exam. Didn't she do A-levels? You either spend it a nervous wreck or you spend half the night revising into the early hours...
On why Gunn gets the law injection
Into the belly of the beast we go, as Angel Investigations joins Wolfram and Hart, aka Evil Lawyers, Inc. (though most people would say that the word 'lawyers' is quite enough in denoting their allegiance to good or evil - we've never heard how much they charge, after all...) The reasons why they individually made the decision are never really stated in 'Home', but as far as we can tell, it's mostly to do with being able to fight evil toe-to-toe from within, with infinitely better resources at their disposal.
So far, Angel's playing Big Boss Man, fucking up regularly with the clients and being generally confused. As well as killing a lot of people. Spike's getting on people's nerves and being ghost-like. Fred's running the science department and discovering the work of telling people what to do. Lorne is having far too much fun in the entertainment sector, talking to the likes of Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, and Wes is doing research and the work of actually running the firm, as opposed to being the figurehead. Gunn, on the other hand, we weren't quite sure what he was doing, aside from communing with the big kitty upstairs and helping Wes, in the running department when we caught up with them at the beginning of season 5.
From here we have to take a step back and examine the concerns Gunn was voicing about himself in S4. He'd been feeling lost for a while, ever since he settled into Angel Investigations, after Angel came back and started playing master of the house. Pre-AI, he'd been the leader of his own demon-fighting crew. Master of the situation, had a purpose and reason for being. When he joined AI, and after Angel came back to AI after one of his periodic 'beige' periods, Gunn started to feel increasingly extraneous. Wes had his unique skills, Fred had her unique skills, Angel played big boss vampire-with-soul, and Cordy had the visions. The skills that he brought to the situation weren't particularly unique - fighting, and experience. He couldn't translate obscure texts or have a degree in anything, like Fred and Wes did, being the other non-super-powered humans in the team. As he put it himself 'I'm the muscle'. Even on his own cases, for example with Gwen, this had been confirmed in his own mind. Smooth talker, good at the fight, good in a tight situation, but how good's that when running a law firm compared to all these guys with major amounts of education? The others may have not thought this, and Wes sure as hell didn't, as he's always seen Gunn as essential, but to Gunn - self-doubt's really not a good thing when you're heading up a law firm and learning as you go along.
So, along came the offer from Eve and the Senior Partners to boost his brain, to a point beyond having the direct link to the Senior Partners through the kitty in the White Room, and in his own mind, compete on the playing field that everyone else was. He grabbed the chance with both hands - all that learning, all the respect that comes with it so he'd be level with his friends and therefore indispensable to them. His confidence has taken a boost, and he's useful in his own eyes. One thing Gunn has tended to need since he first had to stand on his own two feet is to be useful, as he was always the one everyone relied upon, from his sister upwards.
So now? The boy has a purpose, a place, and a shedload of confidence. As well as a very nice line in designer suits. And no, we don't think he's going to the dark side as Angel suspects. (Angel has always had a rather ... simplistic worldview. That's why Darla was the acknowledged brains when they were together.) He's actually proven to be the one who can think his way out of things and get the bad clients screwed over bloodlessly while the firm still wins. He's handling negotiations, buttering up the pissed off, and enjoying himself. Considering what we saw when he was at the Japanese party back in S4, this is something he's damn good at, working with people and negotiating. Gunn has his groove back. And he is so the man. Maybe even as much as Denzel.

So, along came the offer from Eve and the Senior Partners to boost his brain
I'd make a point here that W&H didn't boost his brain in the sense of making him smarter - he's always been that, his cunning and intelligence is what kept him alive when fighting the vampires on the streets. What the process did do is provide him with formal education and knowledge to a level comparable with Wesley's and Fred's, just in a different field and without all that tedious studying.
