Two of my lesser-known favourites - The Juniper Tree, in which the wicked stepmother cuts off her stepson's head, ties it back on again, fools her daughter into thinking she's killed her brother, makes him into black pudding and feeds him to his father. Fun all round!
And Hans Anderson's The Travelling Companion, which I'm currently unhealthily preoccupied with, because on the one hand - slashiest fairy tale in the world, and I genuinely like it. And on the other - the princess gets well and truly punished for showing signs of independence, not only physically, but spiritually and mentally too. I mean, it's a really thorough job, you've got to hand it to them.
