burntcopperYes, pain. Am going through fic I haven't had time to read - found some 'eh', some absolute fucking gems, and then the really painful ones. The ones where you find yourself stumbling because of jarring grammar or bad characterisation. I think the jarring grammar ones are the worst, because with bad characterisation you can at least speed through the fic. Jarring grammar, you have to actually concentrate to get through a sentence, let alone a paragraph. Do these writers not listen to themsleves or other people actually talk?
Say it with me, people... 'Contractions are our friend. Our very special friend. Who we will hug and squeeze and call George. And we will also watch our tv shows, and listen to how our characters speak, and listen to our friends and how they speak. And we will not write another word until we've grasped this.'
Christ almighty, Frasier and Niles Crane use more contractions than some of these writers. And these writers? Many of them're writing Smallville. There's no mercy in this world for people who want their daily dose of fic.
