Fandom musings

Had pubmeet #1 last night, (there'll be another next week since a load of people had staff duty at the L Word convention this weekend, or the lesbian dance fest as it's being known in certain circles) and there were about six of us. Lots of fandom as discussion talk. Ming turned up just as everyone was going, so had long talk with him. Conversation interestingly turned to how certain fandoms last or age. For example, Buffy/Angel fandom has been dropping off sharply fic and convention attending-wise very quickly. This year's B/A conventions have already been feeling tired. The hardcore are going to them to see our mates and party, we're not discussing the actual fandom, and when we ask the actors questions, we ask them about what they're doing now, or acting stuff, not about set or character stuff. Next year's Not Fade Away is being seen as the farewell retirement party more than anything. Had a bit of a talk about which fandoms age really quickly - enthusiasm dropping off quickly, that sort of thing. Buffy, looking back at the first year dvds, ages really quickly, because it was so consciously of the now. Same with original BSG. The ones that survive are the ones not so conscious of their time and have a bit more of an overarching plot.
