It's been quite some considerable amount of time since I saw the film, but I seem to remember it did treat the relationships a bit better and wasn't quite so dull as the book. But then, I was 15 or 16 and there was full-frontal nudity, so I possibly wasn't in a position to make an unbiased assesment...
