or to phrase it better, what characters in fandom did you open the book/turn on the tv and your brain just went '...Yes. Hello.' and completely connected with? Somehow your brain went 'where have you been all my life?'.

We're not talking 'learned to love'. We're talking very first scene here. First one you can think of. Not trying to be clever, the first one your brain pulls up. Most people who've read this journal can probably make an educated guess on mine.

Jenny Sparks.

Who's yours?

Roy Harper and Bart Allen. Just - instant, overwhelming love.

Also, Jack Aubrey. I'd gone in expecting to be all about Maturin but I fell totally for Jack. And, now that O'Brian's dead and I've read all the books, it feels a little like Jack's dead. He's never going to get any older, he's never going to have more adventures, he's never going to lose all his money again and then miraculously recover it. It's really stupidly upsetting.

Jeff Murdock on Coupling.

Maurice Moss on The IT Crowd.

In both cases, my brain screamed, "That's ME! Me! My people!"

Starbuck. Which is a little odd, because I'm not a huge BSG fan in general, but I put in the miniseries after everyone told me I needed to watch, and, yeah. Also, Veronica Mars, though only in S1; when she was more a fan of letting people be impaled on their own swords/the pimp-slap of justice and less just out-and-out vindictive. Most recently, Monica from Heroes.

Doctor Nine. And being an Old Time Who Fan, I expected NOT to like him.

Methos from Highlander. Complete love from first seeing him sat cross legged on the floor listening to a walkman. Of course watching an entire year of Holby City because Peter was in it is probably taking the love above and beyond!!

Franciscus Ragoczy, Conte de Saint-Germain (Chelsea Quinn Yarbro). Picked up the first book in the series in 1984 and I still love him. Am currently re-reading all of the books. What I love is that Chelsea has obviously thought about who could play the Count in a film version, the dedication in Communion Wine is - To Philip Quast, if only you were 5' 6". I can so see where she is coming from.

Valentine White Crow in Mary Gentle's book "Rats & Gargoyles" and subsequent.

Granny Weatherwax in Discworld (which is truly frightening when you think about it)

Zhaan on Farscape

Susan Ivanova on Babylon 5
