Of all the AOS characters, Karl Urban's McCoy most closely resembles his Prime counterpart. So I actually think (for me anyway) the subtext exists primarily due to the changes in Jim, and the timeline (seeing these characters 8 years before we did in TOS, and so many of them at the Academy together).
In the Prime universe, I think Jim didn't meet Bones until he was assigned to Enterprise in 2265 (replacing Dr Piper)? But I don't think we're ever actually given an explicit canon reference. I'd have to go trawling through Memory Alpha to be sure.
Both universe's McCoy, tho, were cranky, stubborn, and tended to boss Jim around a lot. As CMO, that's pretty much par for the course.
