Meme start-up
Apr. 5th, 2003 07:55 pmWas going through my comics collection (what I can access of it, anyway) to find the ones I don't care about that're also in decent condition and collection-sized chunks to sell on ebay. Got some sellable stuff - post-Ellis Authority, Ultimate Spiderman, that kind of thing. At the same time I was coming across odd issues of series I knew were stored elsewhere, and miniseries I worship.
So, just a few questions for all you comics geeks out there (And remember, these have to be the ones you prize above rubies) :
Series that died an undeserved death due to lack of readers and attention and you're *still* bitter about it:
Chase, Resurrection Man
Miniseries of worship:
Scene of the Crime, Siren, Batman : Black and White
One-Shot:
Garth Ennis' and Steve Dillon's Heartland
Series/runs that finished in full glory:
Stormwatch/Authority (Ellis period - I refuse to accept anything before/since) Transmetropolitan, Hitman, Preacher
Any common threads?
Detective Noir and mad, bad, insane British writers
And finally... Cast one of the leads. One. Singular. Comic, Character, Actor:
Resurrection Man : Mitch Shelley : Sean Bean (mode : Equilibrium, Extremely Dangerous)

re Heartland
Date: 2003-04-05 04:36 pm (UTC)Hope you don't mind me posting here. I don't think we've ever talked, but I'm aware of you from the LJ's of various people I admire.
I was pleased to see mention made of Garth Ennis' superb "Heartland" story. Having never really followed the adventures of La Constantine much, Ennis' Ulster-connected stories have always been my favourite Hellblazers. (I think they were around the ep. 67-75 area).
Having grown up in part in Lisburn, Co. Antrim (about 8 miles south of Belfast), I'm happy whenever our little fucked-up corner of the word gets a positive mention. I can speak from experience that the father and son conversation scenes in Heartland catch the jaded, resigned but surpsisingly tolerant character of Ulstermen pretty much bang-on.
However, perhaps my opinion of Heartland is coloured by my deep love of just about about everything Mr.Ennis has done, dating from his spellbinding 1988 debut with "True Faith" in Crisis (still the only comic title I've collected every issue of) to his current devastatingly moving War Stories.
I sometimes think some of his work could only possibly have been written by an Ulsterman.
And of course he has the perfect fraternal foil in Steve Dillon. (Ezquerra too, but then CARLOS.IS.GOD!)
So, um, yeah.. Heartland. An underrated gem. Good choice.
In other news, I admire the works of Greg Rucka, Judd Winick, Chynna Clugston-Major, Steve Rolston, Jen Van Meter, Andi Watson (most Oni & Slave Labor stuff, actually), Colleen Coover, Molly Kiely, Jim Mahfood (in small doses), Alan Moore (natch) and many, many more that I'd be able to think of if it weren't 1.30am.
But the one man without whom I couldn't survive this cold and loveless world is his supreme majesty Terry Moore. "Strangers In Paradise" was, is and forever will be the one thing above all else that makes me a comic art fan.
But dude, y'all didn't ask about that.
Sorry for rambling. Won't do it again.
Cheers,
Chris Jordan
