Don't know if I ever posted this little discussion between various of us at Ascendant, where we were figuring out where sci-fi shows came in the 'probability' stakes.
Star Wars doesn't count as that takes place in the past, not the future. But we mightily approve of its vision of empire in its heights to crumbling down dirtiness a generation later. It has already been proved that the near future is Blade Runner. (or rather the ICL complex in Middlesborough)
So, without further ado, I give you The show that shows us what...
Normal space travel will be like, pre-aliens :
Red Dwarf. Yep, they're space crews, they're that awful. The American end of space is Firefly.
The first alien encounters will be like :
Alien. The first depiction of the working class in space. And it won't be nice, it'll be nasty, with bureaucracy everywhere.
Humans and aliens trying to work together will be like :
Babylon 5. (though slightly idealised, we're leaning more towards Farscape, though)
The really bloody awful parts of the galaxy are like, post-aliens :
Farscape.
Star Trek doesn't make the grade as it's far too idealised for real human nature and the aliens are way too empathic. Yeah *right* their cultures are going to be that understandable to white-bread Americans raised in the Mid-West.
