Was just putting myself on the organ donor register (and also ordering a card while I was there - mine's pretty much illegible and disintegrating due to me carrying mine around in my wallet for the last 16 years, as I picked it up at the library when I was little) And noticed something interesting, which I also had to fill in on the blood and bone marrow forms this afternoon. This question is also on pretty much every application form you'll ever find for jobs. The ethnicity question. In most cases it's there so they can take note of quotas, or show they've interviewed enough people of each race to be fair, and so on. Basically it's for sanctimonious saving face reasons. Normally you just employ the person who's best for the job, or has the biggest tits, or whatever.

I asked about the tick box thing at the blood donating, thinking that surely it didn't matter when it came to this, as you don't need he survey statistics, you just need the blood and likelihood of problems. Apparently it turns out it's for medical reasons, especially with bone marrow and organ donation. All to do with compatibility. My organs/blood/bone marrow are more likely to be genetically compatible with someone of Saxon/Viking/Celtic descent. And a quick note like that just speeds up the search.
