They have also said 'you know, now that we have the camera, we can safely kill you and get someone else to take the photos...'

My response : 'nuh-uh. The camera doesn't matter. You need a large amount of experience (at least three months) before you can take consistently good compositions, or effing huge amounts of natural talent. So neurrrgh.' (borne out of my own experience - the leap in quality between the photos you first start taking and those of six months later of people on a photography course is scary)
