The Women in Refrigerators thing in comics.

I'm sitting here, trying to think of women that I could continually respect in comics, and the only one I can think of that didn't have anything horrible happen to her is Supergirl. And only after she got her own comic and Peter David championed her cause, and gave her a personality.

Supergirl - basically a non-entity. David points this out in the one-shot appearances he did with her as a lead-in, so merged her with Linda to give her depth. Lost some of the sillier powers, got cooler new ones, and a great big personality of snarkiness, bitchiness, self-righteousness, moments of giggly... She stopped being a so-called perfect non-entity and became someone real. Plus, I love the fact, that Supergirl, who was basically created as fantasy figure, changes down to someone who's fairly normal in her alter-ego of Linda. With about a B-C cup, who tends to dress in comfortable clothes most of the time. and when she loses her powers and the Supergirl body, there's even rants from her at bystanders "Go on, say it! Yes, Supergirl, but shorter, less busty, less -". and a great moment of one person saying "Actually, I was going to say cuter."

Not to mention the costume she wears after that is skimpier and sillier. But for once there's a reason, unlike with Huntress' monstrosity. She steals it from a fancy dress shop when she's desperate, and since she's constantly on the road at that point, she doesn't have the time to change it. David also makes a very firm point about how she's viewed. As Supergirl, she's objectified something chronic by onlookers. As Linda, she gets the people she actually wants.

As for the supporting characters, I'm desperately glad that none of them get targeted stupidly or have terrible things happen because they're the supporting characters, and therefore fair game. Sure, there's the occasional broken limb, or being knocked unconscious, or reoccuring alcoholism, but this is mostly caused by the shite that happens in Leesburg, from falling buildings, or because they're in high-risk, high-stress jobs. It's not a direct result of being friends/relatives to Supergirl.

I have no idea where I was going with that rant. But maybe it's that Peter David at least can write girls properly, as seen in YJ.

And dammit, I want Warren Ellis to spread his disease, where women are funny and tough and real, and are never victims - and often than not, the heavy hitters and leaders of the team. Where Jenny said that she's not wearing spandex as she hasn't got the tits for it, and Angie wandered around in a t-shirt and knickers half the time because she was an exhibitionist, and the head of Global Frequency was akin to Claudette Wyms on The Shield, and Jakita Wagner just loves to beat things up, and Meggan stopped being a bimbo, and.... :nostalgic sigh:
