Back in the land of the estuarite
Oct. 3rd, 2004 12:34 pmWell, concluding the Falmouth chronicles, there was going for a walk to Swanpool by the cliff road, the rain starting as I got back to Falmouth, getting utterly soaked - oddly, being soaked whilst in the countryside is entirely different to being soaked whilst in urban areas, because as soon as shops appear, it's suddenly depressing and you feel the urge to seek shelter. When there is no shelter, it's more of a stoic 'oh, what the hell, I'll dry eventually' feeling. Most odd. Katie came over, we meandered around town, ate a large amount of japanese food at Dao's whilst reminiscing about other Japanese - it turns out she got utterly addicted to sushi and sashimi in NYC, whereas I'm a noodles and rice girl. Went drinkies at the new-to-us Wetherspoons on the moor, where we noted that students colonised the upstairs, and all signs were written in English and Cornish. Also encountered Rob from student days, who had made an absolute about turn to long-haired and grungy. Considering this was a boy who used to spend ages on his hair and care on which labels he was wearing during the college days, we gaped somewhat. Meandered some more the next morning, managed to lose Katie at one point, then said farewells. Buggered off to the South East after packing up the flat.
Hmm. Have been once again delighted by the latest fic on
indeedsir, which services the Jeeves and Wooster fanbase. It's one of the few communites where the writers not only attempt to get the characters right, but also attempt to ape the author's writing style. Pratchett writers also do this, but not to such an extent, although the inclusion of footnotes is positively encouraged. Wonder if this is an extension of literary fandoms.
And on that note, this reminded me of the time I got some fanfic written for me, in the early days of my involvement in BtVS. And when I mean fanfic, the writer was trying to ape my style, as the fic was a birthday pressie fic. It was stunningly awful, not that my writing was much to write home about, but I think the way that made me most wince was the utterly shallow way it was done. Stock phrasing, without the attempt to make it flow properly or understand how you should use it.
