Bride and Prejudice
Oct. 18th, 2004 01:40 amYou all need to see this. Really. It's really, really good, there's obviously no spoilers - there's Bollywood, there's Austen interpreted *fabulously*, there's colour and singing and elephants and lifeguards joinging in on the music numbers!
Seriously. Some points you're squeeing about how they've done several of the topics, others you're killing yourself laughing over the mother, the Mr Collins bloke, or going 'oh my god, this is Mary's recital, isn't it?'. According to mum, the Austen fanatic of or family, the Jane character is best Jane *evah*. Mr Collins is... the cinema, which was rather packed, could not stop either laughing or wincing. Lizzie character, fabulous, feisty and then some. Dancing! Eee!
Possibly the only problem I had was Darcy, played by Martin Henderson (Carrie's boyf Aidan, Sex and the City). Not nearly arrogant and smouldering enough. Nice, but that was about it. I have been forever ruined by Colin Firth, I'm afraid.
With this in mind, went to check on imdb to see who would be Darcy in the Keira Knightley version next year. Ooo, Matthew Macfadyen (Tom from Spooks). He will do nicely. But
dolores, you know we were having that discussion about how everything Tom Hollander does, he's incredibly gay in? He's Mr. Collins. I'm never going to be able to watch the role again with a straight face.
(for those confused, we were having a discussion about certain actors not being able to pull off anything but a certain sexuality, no matter what their actual sexuality. We know Hugo Weaving is straight in real life, for example, but even when he's playing a rampant female totty chaser, he comes off as doing it because he's in the closet)
