If anyone watched University Challenge tonight, the dark-haired bloke - Wallace - on the Durham team - that was my cousin Mark. Yes, the smug bastard who got a lot of the answers right and saluted at the end when everyone else waved.

We did proceed to ring up his parents and point out that we got more answers right than he did. (not to mention me pouring scorn on the Kingston team for getting none of the Disney questions right)

We should have known he was one of yours...He was very good indeed, particularly in the last minutes when he really got on a roll.

What shocked me was people's inability to hear operatic voices - all they had to do was listen and they could not even do that. And Paxman for some reason thinks Verdi wrote Don Giovanni - hmmm!

Obviously, there is a world of sad UC junkies out here in LJ - we should claim to be an educational organization and put up a team.

What was surprising was that me and dad got all the operatic ones right, as this branch of the family? Not that musical. I was 1/3 of the school orchestra's percussion section and I can sing a bit. Thing is, also not a lot of people even think about what range an opera's in, it's merely a matter of 'oh, sounds nice'. I just know what a tenor is because I know what Pavarotti and Carreras sound like.

And yep, this family is trivia and smug bastards r us. Fear us at Trivial Pursuit.

Though quizzes always get you surprised at what you *do* know - all the bakery questions, for instance. Though we would've poured scorn on Mark for not getting stottie cake right.

I could hear the differences, but didn't have a clue which voice was called what. Massive but clearly not uncommon level of ignorance there.
