First day of work
Jul. 11th, 2005 08:34 pmWell, it was boiling. And sticky. And you do not want to know about the Bakerloo line, where I made a pregnant woman sitting next to me immensely happy by being the only person in the carriage with a fan. Both escalators got shut down on the way home due to the down one having a bloke fall down it, and the up one creak to a halt due to the sheer weight of people on it.
Very very grateful that my new place of work believes in casual. You may come in in smart casual but all the boys will be wearing baggy trousers and long shorts, with Clockwork Orange t-shirts. All praise linen skirts, that's all I'm saying.
Spent morning being taught basics of current task, which is checking stuff for mistakes of authors and any formatting. Which has to be done another few times before the articles go live. Frustrating, occasionally, due to not being able to believe how many times authors get journal citations wrong - I mean, how hard is it to get the number of the journal the article you're citing in correct? Satisfying, though. And my eye keeps wandering whenever it's something interesting - so far we've had thyroid problems in Chernobyl, RNA in mice with mutant liver genes, Ferrous Oxide and its effects on certain bits of molecular biology... The people are nice. The office is hot as you'd expect but the windows open and everyone's in a non-stressed mood even though there's backlog and everyone's fine with questions. Am amused that I could answer the question of one of the temps who started last week - and I appear to be the only one without a science degree. They even took me out to lunch in the tradition of 'new person! Eat in restaurant!'. Tom, one of the blokes who interviewed me, had previously asked me a few questions about conventioning, which I thought was being polite and make the new girl feel welcome, but turned out to be at the end of lunch to be a subtle way to get my opinions on Sin City, Batman Begins, and sorting out which members of the Fantastic Four are which.
And... I need a beta. I have Stargate:Atlantis/Dr Who shortfic, Grodin-focussed and it needs a checking over. Help?
