[livejournal.com profile] seperis just wrote a story that involved what servants actually do in a big castle, and this is rousing memories of the first time I watched Edwardian Country House (reality tv experiment where they made people *live* it in full Upstairs Downstairs mode - if you can get your hands on it, it's a fascinating social experiment) and yelling at the tv at the scullery maids who couldn't hack it - seriously, most of the first ones had never even done their own laundry before. Because I'd *done* that job in my teens. Slopping things out, cleaning, non-stop washing up, scrubbing floors - the only difference was that I'd done it for 8-hour shifts, not 14-hour ones. Still came home stinking and shattered. It's called Burger King and understaff in restaurants.

So, out of curiosity, how many of you lot did the equivalent of scullery maid/hall boy jobs?

Dammit. Scrolling through mp3 player on tube to find something to listen to... and could only find about two things I wanted to listen to. My mp3 player (and playlist at work) is full of musicals. Which I so didn't want to listen to today. Ended up listening to DJ Ear Worm's United States of Pop mashups in desperation. Seriously. I own plenty of non-musicals/soundtracks cds, I just don't have any of them ripped (reminds me, really need to rip my alphabeat cd I got for birthday - dad stole it early on. He's currently going through a phase of listening to all the 90s dance CDs, so you get jungle and hardcore bleeding through the walls in the evening and weekend afternoons.) On the other hand, Lissy just chucked her floorfillers cd at me to rip to the shared folder because her cd drive isn't reading anything. ah, sweet, sweet blessed coincidence.

Developed a very odd tic in the last month or so. Squinting when concentrating. it doesn't make me see better, so why the fuck I'm doing it i have no idea.

Those of you on the barrowmanonline yahell pit o' voles and fail list:

George announced that ADWD was going to be aired on BBC America.

I replied to the list with what I thought was a reasonable discussion topic - ie, what kind of audience they'd think they'd be getting aside from the JB obsessed, since you don't have the personal investment of following it each week and ringing for your favourite - because the competition aired nearly two years ago, the result is done and dusted, and everyone knows Lee won. I've never heard of them re-running pop idol...

George has just emailed me off-list :

And like I said, George emailed me back off-list with this :
George's response )

Cue me facepalming and replying :

um, yes, that was what I was asking of the list - who they thought would be watching it. i was interested in what the list thought because I've never heard of tv channels re-running the 'vote for your favourite' pop-idol type shows. America's next top model, yes, where the public has no vote, but not the ones where the viewers voted.

....Missing the point much? Considering the list was discussing it to hell and back when it aired....
