Nobody come near me. Woke up at 8am this morning feeling groggy, went for glass of water, went back to bed for an hour. Didn't wake up til 10:15am. Every single joint ached, head feels like it was stuffed with cotton wool. Shambled downstairs to have brekkies, then groped in cupboard for pain pills. Decided a bath might be a good idea for the joints. Had bath, jaw still aches a bit, but head still feels like it's stuffed with cotton wool.

Here's hoping it clears up by late afternoon, as we've tickets for the Open Air Shakespeare at the Abbey Ruins (a tradition that has been going on for several years and appears to have spread to other towns - suddenly posters are popping up everywhere). Merchant of Venice this year, something I've never seen previously - you get a bit biased by what you were given at school/see on tv/film. For me that's Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, Love's Labours Lost, As You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, Midsummer Night's Dream, Henry V, King Lear, Othello and Richard III. Crossing fingers that it doesn't rain as it has a tendency to do - regulars tend to bring anorak and sweater as a matter of course. Already rained today, but still cloudy.

I did Merchant of Venice for Eng Lit O-level. Quite possibly my first brush with slash as our English teacher was convinced Antonio and Bassanio were gay.

Richard III. Hmm..... my hero ;-)

Oh, they so were. All the 'no greater love hath man' prose. Actors weren't doing the looks, but the language was bloody dodgy. Especially when Bassanio said quite publically (and in front of Portia when she wasn't doing the lawyer schtick) that he'd ditch everything, including Portia for Antonio. Am thinking that Antonio's gay and Bassanio's bi.

Oh, and if you want real subtext, go check out Othello.

I'm obviously my dad's child. Pulling for Shylock all the way. Plus couldn't help but be offended by the racism stuff.

I know I certainly found it hard to fault Shylock's, given Antonio et al's previous treatment of him. It also boggles the mind that they are still living brain donors about still banging on about Jewish conspiracies and control of the financial system etc!

On the gay front, one of my classmates tried to take the piss by asking the English teacher if, since he finds Jessica attractive "Even in the lovely garnish of a boy", Gratiano was gay too!

Also occurs to me this English teacher is probably also responsible for my first brush with fanfic - first assignment from him was to write a story based on Day of the Triffids.

Hell, I got a Copy for that, a commendation which involved you showing it to the headmaster so he can note it down in a book... The ways of public schools are subtle and mysterious...
