now watched two eps of Herc and two of Xena.

Is it me or are the Xena ones better written, acted, snappier and funnier? (with far better fight scenes) Or am I just seeing a bad sample?

Yes, I reckon they are. But they still make me wince sometimes - I can't watch too many at once. Too American in places - they're supposed to be ancient Greeks. Oh well, it's supposed to be entertainment, I should shut up :-)

...I just watched an ep where Cernunnos was apparently out to wipe out the Celts. No, seriously, WTF?

On the other hand, I cannot love their versions of Cupid and Aphrodite more.

The Celts were found all over Europe so maybe it was possible? possible in the scheme of things? XD and yes, I enjoyed Xena a lot more. Hercules wasn't as interesting character as Xena.

Cernunnos. Celtic god. Out to wipe out the Celts. like I said, WTFBBQ? I feel the need to invoke the Karl Urban eyebrow of disbelief.

Problem with Herc is that they made him... nice. and boring with no apparent sex drive. and *nothing* like the mythic figure who was a selfish, whiny boyfriend-beating bastard out for himself.

Gods sometimes do like wipe out their peoples (re: Noah's Arc). It was thing to do, maybe? but yes, not too much sense there.

It was enough to make you support the bad guys and gals, which is always a bad thing when you're supposed to cheer for the hero.

Did you ever see the Hercules films as commented on by Mystery Science Theatre 3000? With Steve Reeves, as canonised by the Rocky Horror theme song....

What I've always loved is that the writers clearly knew their history and mythology - and then changed it to suit themselves!

I think I may have to steal a friend's dvds and just watch all the Aphrodite, Ares, Salmoneus, Joxer, and Autolycus eps.

Not the ones where they turn up in modernday USA then? Or the ones where Xena has an identical twin? Or...
