Underworld
Sep. 24th, 2003 08:44 pmIt's not rocket science, but it's an enjoyable film. The whole 'Romeo and Juliet with vamps and werewolves' line they fed to the studio is so bloody untrue, as there's practically no interest romantically between them. It's more fascination on Selene's side about why the hell the werewolves want this kid, and Michael's complete confusion with what the hell is going on. But she's decided to throw her lot in with Michael rather than her fellow vamps, so you could see it possibly happening on the fuckbuddies and us against them level.
Gun battles pretty. Production design pretty. Interesting ideas thrown up, some on origin and society, and some on things like silver nitrate bullets to poison the system because they're liquid, or military uv radiation hardware replicated and given a purpose in bullet form. Some of it got a bit confused, but in general it was fairly coherent, and I enjoyed. Plus? No Matrix-style bullet time, which was a big relief. I'd heard Matrix-allusions, but this was just the leather and gun stuff, little bit of fuck someone up with fists. No superpowers beyond what you'd expect for vamps and werewolves, plus a rather nifty trick where they drop from a great height, land in a crouch and walk away without a thought. Though the werewolves... er, nice transformation, guys, but where's the hair? If the production lot had thought about the hair, I would have been very happy about the werewolves.
