Been to see Finding Neverland. So. Damn. Perfect. One of those...oh, I dunno, tender films. The ones where when it's funny, everyone's chuckling, not laughing out loud, and later on in the film you're crying. Beautifully judged, nuanced performances. Johnny Depp is effing perfect as J.M. Barrie, and has a fabulous accent - soft Edinburgh burr, but softened because Barrie's obviously spent quite a bit of time in England. Kate Winslet's her usual fabulous bravery and dignity in the face of adversity, the boys are really good, and Dustin Hoffman is having a whale of a time as the financier; the actors, and Radha misch-something (argh can't remember surname) was really good as social climbing but shut-out wife. Great script, beautifully shot, the right amount of whimsy with bits of seriousness. Also, fantastic bit where a friend points out the rumour of insinuation that he's interested in the Llewellyn-Davies boys for the wrong reasons, and Depp's reaction is a faint look of disgust and then a short question of how *anyone* could even contemplate that kind of thing.
Went to Loch Fyne after, where positively stuffed self on mussels. As in there was still a third of the fuckers left before I pushed it away and moaned 'no more'. Made trouble later by asking for a glass of milk during the coffee course, (seriously needed it to help settle stomach post-mussels) parents groaning at the waiter that I first started being this difficult in a Michelin-starred restaurant.
Waiter, who spoke very good english and decided to be a smart bastard and make a joke : Perhaps mademoiselle here would like a glass of milk?
Me, feeling evil : :smirks: Yes.
Waiter clearly going 'oh, bugger' because he's going to have to explain to the chef, late at night, why he needs the milk : Er... hot or cold?
Also sitting here thinking about age stuff. Mostly because there's a girl at Starfury cons who we once got into a debate about because although she looks quite young and has the sheer bendiness of the young, acts the same as the 20-somethings who make up a large proportion of the population and isn't accompanied. She's also started stewarding. Was sitting with her at the last one and found out that she's only just 15 or 16. One of those. She had quite a giggle over it because she wasn't sure if people knew. I pointed out that people tended to go 'she looks young, but she *can't* be, since she's hanging around with the older lot and doesn't act kid-like'. Interesting, the way the mind tends to work. Especially since there's a girl who goes who's got some sort of growth problem - very short, looks about 12 aside from her eyes and the fact that she's got small tits (oh, and a credit card and the clothes) but is in fact 21 who goes to these things. Wondering if it's a convention thing, where you get used to the out-of-place as normal - girls who're mostly bisexual or at least bi-curious, girls wandering around in practically nothing and very few batting an eyelid, most are fully cognisant on how to bump and grind with their own sex and make it look real, etc. (I thought most girls knew how to, or that it was natural. See me disabused of this notion at a Walkabout pub one night. Two girls who kept giggling and couldn't have looked more uncomfortably straight if they'd tried)
