Things to do on a Saturday
Feb. 5th, 2005 09:44 pmThe night before, stupidly agree to hand out flyers for a mate's business. In a small costume. In February. This requires getting out of bed at 7:30 on a Saturday. Have grave misgivings. Get arse out of bed at 7:45, stumble into shower, grab two pairs of tights on the way out and get to Camden tube station at 9:45, 45mins before the others show up. Consider even more that am going to freeze. Friends turn up. One draftee of equal foolishness, one evil overlord. Hustle to ladies public loos, change, give complete eyeful to people using loos, who do not expect people to be changing into sparkly outfits at that time in the morning. Go out in Columbia from Rocky Horror Show costume, handing out leaflets to goths and anyone who looks like they'd be vaguely interested in the business. On rejoining the others, give thanks that am at least wearing two pairs of tights and a jacket, and am thus not in the Jessica Rabbit costume like Liz is, which leaves shoulders bare and requires vertiginous heels. Swap with Tors (who is wearing a full-length dress with no splits in it and a leather jacket. bitch.) and hand out flyers outside station. Bond with other leaflet-handers out and DM board-boys in mutual sympathy. Except I am colder than they are. Shuffle feet and make noises vaguely like tapping to keep warm, since am standing still and freezing arse off now. Do Charleston for Japanese tourists who request tap-show as am wearing tap shoes, after explaining that I have no skill in the art of tap. One more lap of Camden, then one with Liz to get rid of last of leaflets. Most original line being to hand them to completely boring blokes and point out it would be an alternative Valentine's pressie.
Results : Even if it is Camden, still get stared at and photo taken if wearing hotpants and gold sequinned tailcoat and top hat.
If you are dressed as Jessica Rabbit, you will get proposals of marriage from strangers.
Elvis impersonators who run chestnut stalls will grab leaflets from you and give you free chestnuts.
Stall holders who run fetish clubs will take great sheafs of leaflets, especially when you list all the costumes made.
Leaflet swapsies with the other leaflet people.
No-one will recognise you in normal gear afterwards.
Afterwards, joined Taz for stalking of the riverside foodstalls, looking for vague ideas for costumes for Serenity (nowt found) since Necromicon cancelled (waaaaaaaaaaaa!). However, Meg slavegirl costume is perfect for Shepherds and Companions night. Then went to vintage frock fair at Chelsea old town hall, going 'dammit, jewellery pretty but when the hell would I wear it, never mind afford it?' Drool over bead skeins. Laugh at certain costumes. Intro Taz to the reason that Coffee Republic hot chocolate is superior.
And now I'm going to watch a dvd. or two.
