Just finished watching Our Mutual Friend

(Steven Mackintosh - Paul McGann - Anna Friel - Keeley Hawes BBC)
And apart from constantly going 'awwww' anytime Steven Mackintosh was on screen (it's a pavlovian reaction, I swear. I even do it when he's shouting at people) and going 'selfish stuckup little twerp' anytime Lizzie Hexam's brother Charley was on screen, I kept reeling slightly. Every time I watch this I forget how damn *gay* Mortimer Lightwood is. (lawyer, best mate and roommate *ahem* of Eugene Wrayburn, Lizzie's intended beau) The confirmed bachelorhood, the complete adoration and concern over Eugene, the bloody living together and slightly sulking about Eugene's thing for Lizzie, not to mention 'anything to see him happy' and then the 'happy on his behalf and constant needling to check he really is devoted to her' he does near the end. And then we have him going over to stuck-in-the-corner old bloke (yet another confirmed bachelor it appears) at the end with a glass of wine and the line 'one more before we finish?'
Trust me, I was sitting there boggling. And it really, really doesn't help that at one point he gets up in the middle of the night and the next shot is of Eugene looking around as if wondering where he's gone and then *asking* him that and what he's doing up sleep-walking and to come back to bed. And later when Mortimer gets up and looks around for Eugene (Eugene having gone off to track down Lizzie and gets beaten half to death) in his waking up scene. (they do these with little establishing shots of all the characters waking up occasionally, rather sweet and mood-enhancing)
And then we get Eugene saying regularly 'you, who I love best' (occasionally modifying it to 'after Lizzie'). Hah. All I can say is wholesome threesome of sorts, because there's no bloody way Eugene is letting go of Mortimer anytime soon, Mortimer propositioning old queens for one night stands aside.
In a word : 'awwww.' Mortimer's onscreen. 'Gay!' 'awwww' 'piss off you little self-absorbed tosser. Heh. You do know she's going to marry a nob when you'll still be a pissant little teacher, right?' (you really, really have no idea how much I hate Charley. 'you're nothing to me, you're an embarassment and a bad sister!' me: 'She's the one funding your bloody education, mate.')
