I'm 2/3rds through Post Captain. I'm reading these unbelievably slowly. Considering I love the writing to bits, I can't believe I'm reading them this slowly.

But is it me, or is Jack actually written as considerably stupider than he is in the film? Or is it just him being quite a few years younger than he is in Far Side of the World, which the film is mostly based on. Or maybe I'm just reading his social idiocy as applying to the rest of it.

He has real intelligence in some areas - you couldn't take a ship around the world and back without being good at maths, and he plays difficult music with real insight. But he is a big klutz, and sort of stays one - Stephen is always commenting on it and various villains underrate him because of it to their cost.

I really must find the time to read the goodish late books that followed the mediocre middle ones rather than just reread the early good ones.
