Someone Who'll Watch Over Me

Utterly fantastic, very moving portrait of three blokes trying not to go nuts while held hostage in Lebanon. Especially good? The drinks, the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang sequence, and any mention of Peterborough United.

David Threlfall and Aidan Gillen were *amazing*. Slightly melancholy mustn't grumble lecturer and mouthy journalist (no prizes for guessing who was who.) Aidan Gillen's Edward was very Stuart-like in lines and pushing people just for the sake of it, but David Threlfall as Michael in all his ineffectualness was brilliant. Less petty than most of his roles. Looking down the bios, can't believe I didn't realise he was in Skellig at the Young Vic a couple of Christmases ago. But then, melancholy depressed and snarling person - typecast for his face? Never. Was definitely an interesting bit when they're talking after Adam's disappeared (almost certainly executed, but they still don't know for sure) and Michael asks if Edward ever slept with him (Edward having arrived two months after them) and Edward just blinks, and almost looks sorrowful. Never did, but the ache of loss is very powerful, as is the point where Edward says that Adam was too good and pure to do so. And the bit where Edward's set free and Michael's left there on his own... Augh. Am glad play ended there, as the despair was awful.

Jonny Lee Miller was good as Adam, who's been there longest and has a habit of reading from the Koran. American accent was fortunately rather mild and utilised only very occasionally as noticeable. (those who've watched Hackers will agree that a US accent is not his best feature) Just not as stand-out and absorbing as Aidan and David.

For all the situation, it's by turns depressing and emotionally exhausting and hysterically funny. 1977 Virginia Wade at Wimbledon, Peterborough United and Sam Peckinpah had the audience in hysterics.

Shamefully waited at stage door for autographs, where me and a couple I got talking to next to me (who are theatre whores, and get regular concessions) were looking at a few actors who we knew but couldn't figure out their names. 'It's him! Arrgh, what is it he's been in?' Were a few of us, and have photo of me and Aidan Gillen. Who is gorgeous and terribly lovely. And can't believe I've seen Mojo. Need to watch The Wire to see his performance in that. Any opinions on it?

Hmm. Do I post to the QAF lists to see what the jealousy rating is...

...Am I the only one disturbed at how pale I am? I look like Farfarello's lovechild.

Followed over from one of the other LJs -- I really enjoyed the play as well and thought David and Aidan were tremendous. I especially enjoyed his imitation of the Queen, not to mention him warble The Water is Wide.

Nice pics too. Glad you got to be shameless. Was worth it, eh? :) He always seems to be surprised that people have seen Mojo. He should be used to it by now, I know a good handful of people who have met him have told him they've enjoyed it.

I definitely recommend The Wire. It's totally absorbing. Great writing, sometimes funny, sometimes really angsty. I'm glad HBO decided to renew it for another season, because I am intensely curious as to what will happen with Aidan's character.

Woo Hoo, go you!

The Queen nearly killed the audience. As did the Queen Mother one.

Would you believe, that one of the times I saw the play, the gentleman next to me not only fell asleep, but SNORED? I was so unhappy. I made sure the next time I went, I was in the middle of my friends!

It you don't want to download it, you can also see about getting a copy from the AG tape tree. http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/Aidan_Gillen_/ and just ask.

Awwwwwwww!!!

THUDDDDDDDD!!!!!

Okay - it's official, I'm jealous. You are such a lucky, lucky girl!!!

Truly - it's so rare to see such candids of this wonderful man, and I'm thrilled to see that you had the opportunity to meet him, darlin'....

Many congrats....

Oh, and I have a question.... Is there anyway that I could post your pic of Aidan on the QAFLOVERS Photo Archive list??? With complete and full credit to you, absolutely. Are you a member of it? There's hundreds of photos - many rare and hard to find like yours, of Aidan and Craig Kelly.

I hope you'll consider it darlin'... But regardless, I truly loved see your pics. Thank you for sharing them...

hugs

Here in Russia I can only dream of seeing my favourite actors in theater plays. That is why it is so important for me to read reviews like yours. So I don't feel gealous I feel thankful:))

Aidan Gillen's Edward was very Stuart-like in lines and pushing people just for the sake of it
That's what worries me - when actors repeat themselves in different roles. Hope that's not the case with Aidan though:)))

And thanx for the pictures, they are great!

It's not repeating, I think they were cast according to their strengths - for example, Edward's not a completely sexual animal like Stuart is. I think it was the similarities of trying to tick people off for the sake of it that reminded me of Stuart most, which was the character's method of coping with the situation. Most of Aidan's roles have been *nothing* like Stuart - the stuff he did immediately after QAF, such as Carver Doone in Lorna Doone was just out and out evil - magnetic, but sheer evil.

well, I didn't have much of a chance to watch anything else but QaF. Err Shanghai Knights, that's it, but I see no reasons not to believe you:)))

He was only there for a few minutes, but completely lovely and a bit surprised. Five of us there, and they were all theatre whores, and one was getting him to sign photos.
