Due to general pressures from mummy dearest and having wanted to get out for years, and finally having a full time job that will enable me to do this (as soon as I combat the scary credit cards sometime soon - I was looking at Gumtree and the whole '4 weeks rent + deposit in advance' had me going 'but... but... 800 quid? :wails: - it turns out the cost is looking around 55-90 quid max on my wages) and having no idea on regions, I'm wondering about advice on areas in London and other good sources for flatshares?

I'm currently looking at north of the river, zone 1 or 2 to cut down on travel costs and time (also possibility of walking to work in the mornings if I'm desparate/transport system fucks up) as I work in Regents Park/Oxford Circus/Goodge st area.

Of course, there's also the whole going round flats/getting all my junk to London somehow thing to factor in, but that's currently being pushed to back of brain.

Well, if nothing else, when are you moving? Because if you're looking at anytime past mid-January, I'd be able to help you lug stuff. *sings* That's what friends are foooooor...

Can't really help you for finding a place, unfortunately. But hey, if you need a roomie post-haste and can't find one, can spend a few months there with you and thus split the costs.

capital flat share - which is run through capital radio - , or the flat share section in the back of Time Out are a good source of places (better than loot anyways.)

sharing is much cheaper than renting a one bed place on your own. near the tube is more expensive than places like hackney etc, where there are good bus/rail routes but no tube. trendy places (camden, notting hill) are obviously also expensive.

zone 3 isn't so bad, but make sure the travel is convenient for where you are likely to go regularly.

erm... i think that's about it. hope some of that helps. :)

Unless you are an investment banker you're probably looking at south of the river or east end really. Or living in a shoebox. :-(

Now you know why I lived in Croydon, where a large 2-bed is £800, as opposed to London where a tiny one-bed is £800. Don't live in Wood Green. Ask Jackie.

A month is sometimes more than four weeks.

I wouldn't go for anywhere inside Zone 3 - it's not really that far into the centre from there. In fact, I'd recommend Zone 4 or further out, as prices noticeably go down there. Avoid Harrow borough, though - they are absolute shite at acknowledging that you've moved in or anything else that vaguely requires them to do something.

By curious co-incidence, I'm also planning moving a bit further into London at some point in the medium-near future, as an hour-long commute each day is just getting ridiculous.

Honestly, you might want to broaden your search. South of the river may very well be cheaper and it can be pretty easy to get to work from there. There's more than the tube to public transport, and even that goes a lot further than it used to.

Agreeing with all previous comments... London on a budget is tough, no doubt about it. A friend of mine just moved to Hammersmith, just on the edge of Zone 2. She likes it, because she's just on the end near Kensington which is good for shops and spotting hideously rich ladies with cashmere shawls.
