Okay, I finished this yesterday. The fact that I was reading it while I should have been writing my own book should tell you something of what I thought about it – if I miss my deadline, I’m blaming you.
Anyway…
Yes, indeed. A lovely, really charming story. The characters were likeable, their voices distinct, and the progression of the affair between Sam and Ed (from lust, to something more, through betrayal and out the other side again) was very believable. I like the back-and-forth between locations a lot, it gave the story a nice sort of rhythm. And very, um, affecting sex scenes, even for a straight man to read. I won’t ask how you know this stuff.
Seriously, I would love to see you revisit this one. I think it deserves your continued attention. If you sort your editing out, do the rest of the shipwreck sequences and slot them all in to the right places to break the story up into a distinct segments, and then just slow down a little at the start, add in some more description to give the reader more of a sense of place and time, you’ll have something very special indeed.
