Huh. Downloaded the latest version of IE. (Yes, I'm a sheep.) It's all... tabs. and icons rather than words. Which means poking around for things like 'save page' and favourites took a while, but now it is shiny and all firefox-like. (even the new IE icon is verging into firefox - that swoosh is distinctly orange) Most amusing.

After reading a bit of meta, was surprised to find that people have guilt over de-friending. Or don't de-friend people to make sure that they don't throw hissy fits and use filters instead. Set me to scratching my head. Seriously. I have two filters : groups (communities, etc) and muppets. Muppets being actual journals as opposed to communities. I used to have a dr who filter back in Nine-era, since things like time_and_chips were just *frightening* in posting volume, but realised after a few months that I never looked at anything but the icon comms since I didn't really get on with most of the fic (aside, of course, from the captain jack fic, and most people who posted Jack-centric fic posted it on galactic_conman) and so left the fic/discussion comms. I have no guilt about de-friending. I don't even have a lot of my real-life fandom mates friended. I only read journals I like the writing style of, and some of these people are people whose journals I originally only friended to get first whack at their fic, and now skate past any of their fic posts, and giggle over stories of their pets/work/adventures in knitting. No-one's ever whined at me for de-friending them. Possibly because people who read me know I'm fairly self-absorbed, callous, and have the empathy of a small rock a lot of the time and know that whining is unlikely to get them anywhere.

Fandoms are starting to bleed into one another again. You know, that bit where you're casually involved in a fandom, and suddenly there's a post, or piece of fic from someone you knew/read several fandoms ago. Well, I suppose with fandoms as big as BtVS or LOTR and suchlike, they were bound to find the newer fandoms eventually. I mean, [livejournal.com profile] jamjar, the evil midget beastie, recognised me from the sodding Giles yahoogroups of all things. SGA? I can cope with that. Seriously, the fucker is massive and crack-like, it's bound to absorb some people. Supernatural? Similar thing. I'm currently seriously WTF-ing over Torchwood, though.

Let me explain. No, let me sum up, is quicker. Someone from... um...I think it was btvs posted fic today. [livejournal.com profile] transtempts, aka Scy. (I think she was btvs, someone correct me on this - she may have been LOTR) I sat there and blinked for a good thirty seconds. Because, well, I think it's to do with perception. Torchwood, on the whole, is very British-focussed as a fandom. To the extent that the fic written by anyone from across the pond, even when they have a damn good Brit-checker, leaps out. Tiny things and turns of phrases that you would never have even noticed previously become huge and glaring. And because it's British, it's insular. We tend to wonder what the americans are even interested in, because the net/fandom? Rarely interested in the programs we put out, because fandom for the most part is US-focussed. So if someone whose name I know from the US fandoms posts, I start wondering what the hell they're doing there and how they found us. And in the deepest 'local place for local people' part of my brain, pout about people playing in our sandbox. But only for a minute. but still go 'WTF?'
