One for the tea drinkers and coffee shop frequenters :

When precisely did normal tea (PG tips, etc) start getting referred to as 'builders tea' in the list of tea options in tea and coffee shops? You get mint, darjeeling, etc... and builders tea. You also hear it more when there's options at work or home, when clarifying which they want, (the other option normally being earl grey or darjeeling), and they'll either say 'bog standard' or 'normal', but the term 'builders' is starting to creep in more. In the case of the tea shops, I suspect it's a marketing thing because it sounds better than PG tips or Tetleys, but still, curious.

Also, anyone seen Power of One? I remember it coming out and of course being all over the teen mags because, hello, Stephen Dorff stripping off and getting sweaty in the name of boxing (some of the films we used to get recced were rather amusing, now I think back on it - the sheer amount of *indie* films that used to get trumpeted because they had River Phoenix or Johnny Depp in them was... rather impressive. Maybe the studios at the time recognised the teen mags as good marketing strategy.). I know it was about South Africa, the rise of Apartheid and a large dollop of white man's pain - but was it any good? (I'm only asking because I happen to have some Hans Zimmer music on my playlist)

Biting nails slightly as there's been no appearance in the morning post at work of packages from Hawaii...

ommmm.... reasonably-priced love... hard-boiled eggs...

(it occurs to me that I really should be listening to Les Mis in honour of Reg and his pamphlets. Sadly, none on this playlist.)

Watched Grease 2 last night. Ah, happy memories of films that you got completely hooked on in your teens one summer and then converted all your friends so mothers were subjected to us singing the songs constantly in the car... Haven't watched it in years, and it turns out that yes, I can parrot the entire script. Michael's manpain song is just as bad as I remember.

Some bits are... my word, TEH GAY. Specifically, the T-Birds paying Michael to write their essays for them and meeting him in little out of the way places round the campus (under the bleachers, behind the sports hall, out of the way corridors) to exchange money for the essays. And they're so surreptitious about it (trying to act cool like they're just hanging out) while he's so comfortable with it - seriously, one of the jokes in that little montage is 'Nobody, but nobody knows this happened - I got a rep to protect, Shakespeare' that they all repeat. It doesn't help that they're so concerned with image and constantly preening, while he tends to smirk at their insecurity. Oh, Michael. :pets him: Yes, we know you're very secure in your self-image and bisexuality and would have no problems shagging most of them for the fun of it. Then there's the All-American girls and jocks who just scream gay. (and, of course, they're dating each other)

Also, vaguely amused that now, with my greater knowledge of musicals, I consider Grease 2 to be the better story, film and musical. It hangs together much better, segues better, the songs are more integrated, etc. Grease always has this air of pasted together.

I have never encountered the term builders tea... but then the last lot of builders we had in here were drinking my Pai Mu Tan white tea...

While I don't love Grease 2 much (or Grease for that matter), 2 did have something exciting in the form of Judy Garland's daughter. Lorna didn't sound much like her mum at that point, but I saw her show a handful of years ago at the Savoy and she's really grown into her mother's voice. Also, she was trying to be all silly and breathy in that film. But still, it's Lorna.

Heya - just wandered onto your journal cos you left a comment on my LoM fic (thankyouverymuch, btw, most appreciated)

And now I feel I must put my tuppence-worth in...

I use the term builder-tea to mean tea which is very strong. So normal bog-standard PG/Tetley/Red label, but so you can stand a spoon in it. If I wanted it normal strength, I'd just call it tea :) I believe you can now buy tea which is called 'builder tea' on the box, and reckons it makes a way stronger brew in the same amount of time and without mushing the bag to bits with the back of the spoon. (My dad shudders when he sees me making tea. He's always saying "Stop bothering that poor teabag!" etc. But he's one of those weirdos who barely likes the hot water to be in the same room as the teabag for more than 5 seconds.)

As an aside - I am in the construction trade, and I find it annoying that everyone assumes that I take sugar in all drinks. Even when you say 'white no sugar' you still get sugar half the time.
