Sound of Music
Really, really, fun. Definite recommend for fun - less saccharine than the film, the nuns are *awesome* - Margaret Preece (you might know her as the singer who sang for Minnie Driver in Phantom) as the Abbess got an ovation for 'Climb Every Mountain' at the end of the first act. Less actual overt nazis, more discussion about capitulating and collaborating - unlike the film, Captain von Trapp doesn't split with the Baroness because she realises he's in love with Maria. They split before he knows Maria's even back because she's okay with collaborating with the Nazis and he's not. Connie Fisher is *brilliant*, and incredibly, incredibly funny. Here's hoping that what she's signed up for next makes use of this. Captain, great and mmmmm. Sadly, slightly less chemistry than Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews, but still good. Kiddies great, and not in the least bit stage school, which is a relief. (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang particularly suffered from this) Frau Schraeder is more glamorous than you and always will be. Max is just.... Hee. Pretty sure he's the same actor we saw as Watty Watkins in Lady be Good at Regents Park.
However, got a slight 'er' at end of night when stage door stalking. We're all waiting around for the actors, Simon Burke (the Captain) comes out to sign and he's just done with it when one of the crowd collapses from a heart attack. Fortunately there were a couple of nurses on hand to keep his heart going until the ambulance got there, but you've never seen something quite as excrutiatingly uncomfortable as a bunch of stage door stalkers waiting around nervously and completely uselessly for the paramedics and then waiting to see if he's going to make it.
