Listening to various musicals. Hmm. Does anyone know if any of the great musical composers had good voices? Lloyd Webber is... not great. Cole Porter famously had a fairly crap voice (but still better than most). Sondheim? Jerry Herman? Irving Berlin? Noel Coward's pretty average, but then he didn't really write musicals as such, and Novello had a lovely voice, but also not actually a musicals writer.

Andrew Lippa's got a good voice, and so does Jason Robert Brown. Do they count? Lippa wrote my second favourite musical, The Wild Party and is working on a musical version of The Addams Family. JRB wrote the Last 5 Years and Parade (recently at the Donmar). They are both New Generation composers though, working now.
