was reading witchqueen's essay on race and slash - here - read all the comments as well.
Aside from the whole ping factor, which is a major part of it, was thinking about the UK version of this. there is bugger all slash where one of the characters is black/asian/arab. Partly ping, partly bloody lazy. Vaughan Rice in Ultraviolet is just not slashable in any way, shape or form. Marquis de Carabas in Neverwhere is eminently slashable, but we never do it. The only characters I can think of slashed in the UK are Nasir (Robin of Sherwood) and Jax (The Professionals). That's... short.
Talked to Meg about this, then Goodness Gracious Me, (where they slash themselves and have that wondrous 'Couldn't you find yourself a nice Indian boy?' sketch) and then Grandma came into my head. Witness the horror.
SaltwaterVice: oh, god, now I've got images of the grandma going "Slash? Ha! I could make it at home for nothing! All I need is two lovely boys, a pinch of chemistry, some lube and a smallllllll aubergine."
SaltwaterVice: small aubergine. oh dear god.
KakkoiiDustergrl: my. ribs. still. hurt. you *bitch*.
:whistles innocently: done this to Meg and her ribs several times today. First there was the rant about the line on this months Boromir pic being utterly unsuitable -
"Let's hunt Some Orc?" feh. should be
SaltwaterVice: "Sooooo, who wants to blow this next?'
KakkoiiDustergrl: ....
KakkoiiDustergrl: my ribs! you *bastard*
SaltwaterVice: :g: It's what I specialise in.
SaltwaterVice: Only those able to handle big weapons need apply.
KakkoiiDustergrl: owwwwww.
Then the realisticness of mpreg in the LOTR verse with deference to species...
SaltwaterVice: then someone spoiled it by pointing out that hobbits are mammals, which since the general record for mpreg is pretty much seahorses and the like only, they'd come down on the side of 'not possible, matey'.
KakkoiiDustergrl: *snerk*
SaltwaterVice: though the pratchett fans pointed out the whole Pratchett thing re: dwarves was the most likely - who can tell what sex they are beneath the beards, helmets and chainmail? Gimli may be female.
SaltwaterVice: terrible shock for Legolas, that.
KakkoiiDustergrl: oww. ribs..can't laugh..
I rule.
