I have one & think it's worth it (490 items in 10 sets!). It depends if you have another space to put photos, if you want to share more photos, if you can afford it.
You can have as many pictures as you want on Flickr, even free, but you can only scan through the last 200 posted (but if you post a link to a picture it remains available on that link)
The advantages to a paid account are: 1) unlimited number of pictures can be scanned/previewed 2) you can upload full resolution versions of your pictures (no real size limit) 3) a whole bunch of other stuff :-) (video uploading, stats, unlimited sets and collections)
It's basically $25 for a year, $48 for two years (I bought a two year account just over a year ago!)
Oh, and if you don't visit your free account for (I think) 90 days, it gets deleted, but a paid for account remains up until your time expires, then it turns into a free account (but all your photos are still in there, waiting for you to upgrade again) ... but I assume 90 days later, if you still haven't visited, then the free account will be deleted.
It's nice being able to put up the full size image, and as many as you want (I have many hundreds of pictures on mine, same name as my LJ!) so I just tend/intend to upload lots and lots of shots of conventions, travel etc. and have them available online.
I find it totally is -- no limits on how much you can upload per month, which actually encouraged me to not only upload more, but take more pictures in general, in that it forced me to justify the purchase by creating more content. And seeing as you actually know crap about photography, it seems like you'd make even better use of one than I would.
