Fangirls tend to have very highly attuned slashdar. This is a truth universally acknowledged. We're so used to picking up the tiny signals of body language and eye contact that we don't require them to be in the same room. goes for het, too.

So when it comes to ongoing serials (tv or comic), it's a given that someone, somewhere has normally paired said couple before they get together in canon.

However, wondering about canon gay couples in serials. Specifically, the ones where it wasn't really obvious character A had been introduced to be character B's significant other with the ensuing angst and will-they-won't-they telegraphed. (see several soap storylines - Beth Jordache and her girlfriend in Brookside, Christian and Syed in EastEnders, Tara and Willow in Buffy, etc.)

The only ones I can think of in personal experience were Midnighter and Apollo in Stormwatch and Authority (crimefighting duo, first canon superhero couple, and I remember a whole bunch of us who were poking Warren and going 'no, really, are they a couple?' while several deniers accused us of over-developed slashdar before the evil sod finally confirmed it in a scene after many weeks of going 'thppppppbbbbbt') and Jack and Ianto in Torchwood, where the slashers started from day one, crowed over all the touches/looks but at the same time got accused of over-magnifying it because it was Jack and he'd flirt with *anything*, so it was *clearly* one-sided. Ianto was straight, dammit, didn't you see Lisa?

Any advances on gay couples in serials that weren't the main story from day one for at least one character?
