Today, Pangbourne village summer fete. Which is a very traditional fete in the great British tradition. Sunny and packed.
Tug of war between the pubs (Star, George, Cross Keys & Pangbourne Working Mens' Club all fielded teams),
dragon boat racing,
coconut shy,
face painting,
WI serving tea and cake,
local brewery manning the bar,
wine bar selling wine and posh cheese sarnies,
crockery smashing (like coconut shy but more... satisfying),
egg throwing,
rotary club with book stalls,
tombolas,
Scouts raising money with bacon sandwiches,
Cross Keys had a hog roast and Pimms,
one of the tandooris doing a brisk trade in naan & curry & bhajis,
local bands,
dogs wandering around and one Welsh sheepdog who was amusing itself teaching children to throw sticks and occasionally herding them,
and the silver band playing Phantom of the Opera and Bond tunes.

There was also a cowboy event but they were crap - seriously, you have an act that requires you to be outside in fields and it relies on music and the tannoy and sound system working? Bugger off and bring back the viking re-enactors we had a year or so ago - they didn't require a sound system, they just got on with it. And projected. We all turned round, re-stocked at the bar and watched the mad bluegrass band who were singing about twitter, broadband not working, how DIY imperils a relationship and the men who put out road cones. Sadly missed the welly wanging. Dammit. But the tug of war more than made up for it. Hysterical and the Star got dragged along the floor by the teenagers during one round.

I have come home with... the Hunger Games trilogy, a jar of very tasty olives, a cd from Fiona Cox - one of the local bands, nice voice, and a quiz to send off for entry into a draw by the local RNLI. RESULT.
