So far, it is most pleasing and already a 100 times better than the bloody itv Kate Beckinsale attempt. V. funny, the pacing's good, costuming/set decor's good, and Romola Garai's very good as Emma - just the right shade of bratty, self-absorbed and oblivious without making you want to strangle her (unlike Gwyneth Paltrow who wasn't... I dunno, developed enough? Too many reaction shot gasps and a bit floaty). Actress playing Harriet is pretty good (not very giggly and a bit less dippy than other Harriets, more naive and being easily led precisely because she's aware of her naivety about society and wants to learn, not being bullied into it), Michael Gambon as Daddy Woodhouse is wonderfully infuriating in his hypochondria, Robert Martin is fortunately *not* a lower-class Tim Nice But Dim, Tamsin Grieg is doing a wonderful job as Miss Bates - it takes you a few minutes to realise it's her even though we knew she was in it, as she's so repressed and flustered. Jonny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightley is doing v. well as foil and getting rather obviously pissed off with Emma in a 'she always does this but it's still sodding irritating' way, and I like the fact that they come off much more as best mates who've grown up together rather than the usual slightly paternalistic relationship. Hence you forget that there's a 16-year age gap. Only problem was that he was a bit wooden during the Robert Martin being above Harriet socially rant. Time will see if he replaces as my fave mr. Knightley Jeremy Northam, which... oh, shush, I'm biased any time Jeremy Northam is involved and I fully admit this.

We fully approve the script adaptation being done by Sandy Welch (previous credits being North and South and Our Mutual Friend). Thank the FSM that they didn't give it to Andrew Davies again, as he's been inclined to mess too much with the source text in the last few years. This one - a few visible tweaks but they're tweaks for the better that neaten up or clarify. Not completely re-arrange scenes and dialogue for no understandable reason. :cough: the recent Sense and Sensibility :cough:.

Looking forward to more of it, only the preview for next week included a clip that had me and Mum going '... I thought that bit was much later. Are we sure it's 4 parts rather than 3?'

Watched Pride and Prejudice. This of course required rewinding several scenes about three times. With the chant of '1, 2, 3, KNEE' during Bingley's proposal. I'm not sure if this means that I've watched this or the Emma Thompson Sense and Sensibility too much. It's one of them. Then, because I was feeling masochistic, I watched the US ending. and then went into catatonic 'AUGH' mode, rocking back and forth. Just so wrong. Wronger than I remember. Mind you, I'd forgotten how long the tracking shots are in this - some masterpieces of timing in this, since they move from room to room and all the characters move in and out of the shot. must track down some more Joe Wright films to see how much he does this. And to see if he ever defeats Serenity for ridiculously long tracking shot.

:sigh:

Having been mainlining the BBC Pride and Prejudice for the past three nights, (flatmate : I love Bride and Prejudice! me : original's better. I mean, we love the B+P mr. Collins, but the Darcy/Lizzie marriage proposal is *so* much better in this one. (proceeds to quote bits, but not perfectly) flatmate : I agree, but may I ask, how many times have you watched this? me : shhhh. wet shirt moment coming up.) I've decided that I need to watch the film tonight. Mmm, Matthew McFadyen. Keira. Rosamund Pike. The short bloke from Bedrooms and Hallways and Enigma and POTC. Donald Sutherland being *awesome*.

The problem? I'm now craving a spectacularly porny P+P wip I had saved to my favourites on my old comp - I stupidly forgot to copy over said faves at the time - everything *but* the favourites - and of course the parentals wiped the memory (mother dearest being a systems person, she wiped it thoroughly). don't remember the title, don't remember the author, it's not on crack_van, and you have no idea how much P+P porn there is on the net and in del.icio.us. :sigh: I want my badfic. Maybe I should just go hunt down The Lost Sex Scenes of Jane Austen in Waterstones for a giggle to see if it'll assuage my cravings. (no really, it's a book in the comedy section that got released for christmas a couple of years back)

Also : Do parents *ever* stop anxiously asking after your social life? I mean, they quiz me about whoever my brother's current girlfriend is (my response being 'I live in London! I barely see you lot! Why would I know?'), and actually bleated 'you know, there's a family gathering coming up, please feel free to bring along a boyfriend or girlfriend' at me on the phone last night. Sometimes I swear they think I'm dating [livejournal.com profile] megolas. I know they were probably sort of convinced a few years ago. The problem with having not ever been in the closet : your parents think *anyone* you bring to dinner/have stay over is a significant other.

Right. Off to funeral in nottingham around 3pm, so will be sans internet access for almost :gulp: 24 hours. Have bought Chris's birthday pressie, got an apology xmas one for Tabs since the actual xmas one is probably useless now, and hope that Rose hasn't bought hers in the few months since. Hansonism encroaching. arrgh. Now I just have the migraines to look forward to... (mind you, I have weaned myself off hair dying)

[livejournal.com profile] astolat has gone and committed Entourage vidding. It's Eric/Vince, but more about the friendship and it's ridiculously bouncy. I'd probably compare it to the Fastlane vid done by... er... :scratches head: Livia, maybe? Oh lord, I need to watch S3....

ITV Jane Austen verdict, Persuasion : Hmm. I'd say this one was the most successful, and even the camera quirks really worked, especially for the end running scene. Anne is convincing, as is Captain Wentworth, and I frankly adored Tony Head as Sir Walter, playing up the snobby tosser for all he was worth, plus Alice Krige brought the well-meaning snobbery for Lady Russell very well - more distant than the BBC version. Very good use of locations and scenery. [livejournal.com profile] alysscarlet, got a verdict?

Dr Who : We love Martha. And the Doctor. He's getting more batshit insane as the series goes on (Christopher Ecclestone being PTSD insane, Tennant being just basically *nutty*). Also, (no, this is not a spoiler), costume departments really need to stop outfitting alien races in such obviously recognisable gear. Those are New Rocks they're wearing. Okay, so you didn't see the logo, but they're er, kind of recognisable. Flatmate watched Dr Who for first time ever, having wandered in when it was just starting with a view to eyeing my biccits surreptitiously (she gets very unsubtle when I've been to the market). Explained to her that this is family entertainment, and one of the purposes is to completely scar little children. And make them hide behind the sofa. She couldn't stop laughing at Tennant's nuttiness or bugging slightly at some of the kid-scaring bits. Time shall see if we have a convert. Conclusion: Uncle Rusty is once again back on form, and actually dealt with the rose question *better* than the end of last season did. Next Saturday, the Cardiff gang take over the Globe Theatre...

An aside for the pubmeet gang, who have a tendency to discuss such things as scheduling and ratings and behind the scenes issues: Did you see what all the other channels put up against it? They've really, really admitted defeat. ITV - Harry Potter, but an hour earlier, in a weak attempt to get the kiddies to stay on that channel. Fat chance. Sky - Next Gen. Channel 5 had Terms of Endearment, which is at least pitching at a different market. BBC2 and Channel 4 had repeats of something, I think.

...I can foresee Any Dream Will Do becomign a guilty pleasure. Rather good seeing the judges giving constructive advice, especially when the 30-something dad came on and JB told him to stop, get on his knees and start singing to his kids. Suddenly, whole different quality of voice. Wincing for the poor sod who got told to re-start about five times, them telling him to go down an octave, or back it up and then it turned out his voice couldn't handle it... Interesting that you start to get in tune with the judges and can actually tell when they're going to say 'no' just from two or so lines of singing.
