Finally got some fic out of the way and posted for the year. It's a start... Contemplating the possibility of a fic journal as a sort of archive-slash-easier-to-find etc for people who mistakenly friend my journal when I post fic once in a blue moon on this journal. And then find themselves bombarded with medical images, weird musings, and squee about batman, barrowman and musicals. So registered [livejournal.com profile] burntozone (no, don't join yet, because you'll just get spammed with all the backdated fic I'm going to dump there) rather than use [livejournal.com profile] darkisrising so I don't have to log out each time I want to post something on there.

Oh, and in the weirdo etymological musing corner, when did 'crash' make the transition from noun to verb in terms of 'falling asleep at/dropping everything at someplace at the end of an event, normally at short notice' in reference to a specific place (useage being 'to crash at'), as opposed to the motion/impact that was the original useage of the verb? I know it's increased a lot in the past few years, but when did it really hit mainstream as a verb? (how to know it's become mainstream : your parents use it in everyday language)

Hmm. Does anyone know anywhere except Body Shop that does normal-sized wooden-backed hairbrushes with wooden bristles on the high street for a decent price (ie, less than £15)? I've only found them in Body Shop, and I really resent giving them my money - the words 'patronising' 'holier than thou' 'owned by L'Oreal who make no guarantee that they're sticking to the no animal testing promise' 'Lush has better products and are funnier' and so on tend to crowd my instant thoughts about that store, and I only ever buy stuff there that I can't find anywhere else. (hairbrushes, the sugaring pots when Boots stopped making theirs) I saw a couple of online stockists but I'm one of those people that like to poke at an item to see if it works correctly before shelling out money. also, less carbon.

Some of you may remember the Torchwood Babies art I recced a while back. There's a full-on comic now... TEH CUTE, IT BURNS. I may be a small gibbering wreck now.

Ronon in a tutu manip. But, er, it doesn't actually look very silly. And my brain is half torn between trying to figure out whether it's going the Ballet de Trockadero de Monte Carlo (the blokes in full ballet drag in tutus and en pointe who take the piss) route or the Matthew Bourne route, which is so manly and thud-inducing that smelling salts are often required for the audience. Because, well, I can see him doing either - alternately giggly and pissed off or smouldering all over the stage. Ronon as The Swan. :swallows: For those familiar with the all-male Swan lake, I'll just let your brains absorb that image. Get back to me when you recover. :muses: Not entirely sure who'd be The Prince in that production, though - I can't think of anyone in the main SGA or SG-1 cast who'd be that lost, insecure and lacking in confidence - you'd have to do major character assassination to get anyone to even get close to it (though you could probably tweak early Xander or Willow from BtVS without a problem).

In other news, foolishly spent a good couple of hours yesterday evening tagging the entirety of [livejournal.com profile] thedarkisrising (ah, the power....). Four years worth. Still got 2006 to go. Course, now I found out that the template for that community doesn't show tags. Oh well. Least it'll show up on the flist. Internet Jesus knows how long it would take with a high-traffic community. Came across the first post about the car crash with added elephants and... oh, fandom. Your poor optimism and tentative hopefulness - because at that point, the narnia film hadn't come out yet so Walden were a completely unknown quantity aside from effects, and then the utter optimism and hope that we had post-Narnia. :cuddles and supplies DIR fandom with vodka: Oh, and found a pre-film rights bought and massacred post about fantasy casting. I'd completely forgotten my musings about Brian Cox as Merriman. Huh. Yeah, *definitely* better than Mckellen.

site stuff

well, in other news, darkisrising.net is back up. Yay!

Kabukivice.com is due to expire in _insert month here_, I'm bored of kabukivice in general as you know, so will let it expire so I've just got darkisrising and burntcopper. Need to transfer everything over to those two. So out of curiosity, poll!

[Poll #884789]

Updated Oi Yanks No with the history bit I've been rambling about recently and *finally* corrected the quote on the front page. Half the emails I get for that site were about that quote, I just never got round to it.

Whilst poking my web stuff, I found my 'ideas for sites' folder. Which included a bit for a Wes/Faith site, back when I was still seriously into btvs writer's guild and mad about sites in general. I remember I didn't want it to be a writer's guild site, due to the restrictions and so on, but was still pissed off enough with the fluffy/coquettish thing that the at-the-time guild site had going, with their image of Wes still stuck in S3 Btvs and 'OMIGOD accent!' But I do love the site statement I wrote for the pairing (which, btw, i still love) :

propaganda )

First, [livejournal.com profile] crepe_suzette explains what Torchwood Three really are : Dad's Army. No, really. And thus actually makes them sound so much more convincing and explains *so much*.

Second. Arrgh. I was hoping for a stress-free evening - it started that way. Jack/Ianto porn, the musicals bits from Children in Need (and Holby City were so much more fantastic than the actual musicals, aside from Connie in Sound of Musicals. So. Must. See. Well, and the BBC newsreaders. But they're always bloody inspired.)

And then I found out why darkisrising.net's mail was giving me error messages on mailwasher. Cue franticness, fury, and tearing out of hair :

:sigh: due to invoices never reaching me, darkisrising.net's domain didn't get renewed on time. The hosting's all paid up, but the name was held by someone else. spent the evening getting it sorted and paid. Now just have to get the nameservers re-directed. Hopefully I won't have to re-load everything and http://darkisrising.net/slash will be back up by the weekend. On the other hand, this is efiction we're talking. gah.

Also, it might possible help if I went and installed terrapin (my lovely, sleek, no frills ftp program I paid 20 quid for back in 2001 and as far as I can tell are still selling that exact version) on the laptop. That way I can actually upload stuff like the updates to Oi Yanks No to my sites. And yes, for the nitpickers, it does include finally correcting the James Nicoll quote on the front page.

Actually, question regarding OYN : from searches and link searches, it appears about all of 2 sites have a permanent link to OYN. But it gets loads of hits, and half the time when someone has an English question, or there's a debate on a forum, Oi Yanks No gets cited to and linked to. So how many of you buggers have it in your favourites?
burntcopper: (ducky)
Spent yesterday doing bugger all, then at 5pm got hit by headache that turned into cramps. arrgh. Went bed and then woke up at 10pm, bloody starving. Ate dinner, went bed at 1am, (hey, this is *good* for me) then lay awake for about half an hour feeling queasy. Yay.

Watched about three eps of Jeeves and Wooster (had meant to watch other stuff but was not in mood) and came to conclusion that ITV and the writers had a mission to make it damn clear that they are like unto a tree full of monkeys on nitrous dioxide. Yes, Jeeves trying to break up Bertie plus any female is one thing, but all the reaction shots of Jeeves looking highly sceptical anytime Bertie makes a mention of possible female companionship? Jeeves, just add a damn green carnation to Bertie's ensemble, will you? (as long as it doesn't clash with his attire, of course) Pouting over the fact that practically entire cast besides Tuppy Glossop, Stinker Pinker, Constable Oates, Spode, Sir Watkyn-Bassett, and Pop Stoker appears to have changed. Some are equally fabulous, or fabulous in different ways (Madelyn even more horrific but not as pretty, the aunts rule, Stiffy too tall but still fabulous, and Bingo? Bingo's supposed to be really good-looking, dammit!) Speaking of Bingo, I keep waiting for Rosie. I want the entirely sensible trash-novel writing wonder who reins Bingo in!

In other news, I really need to poke my fic but have no real bunnies. Oh well.

Oh, and for quick moving people on for sites - I think Oi Yanks No is the one with the most visitors who aren't flist related, so is most in need of this. Anyone got any decent 404 page tutorial links? (ie, that I can put a 'ooops, all pages moved, try here' message on)

If you got to [livejournal.com profile] robinhoodbbc's profile, you may notice that other comms are listed. :wails: It was pre-emptive, dammit! (How to tell one has been part of fandom for too long : you can predict the basic splits and what lines they'll split along straight off.) I won't be able to predict the ships and what'll cause the shipper wars before the show even starts, but I can at least get a quick 'n' dirty fix in for people to post stuff. No, I'm not precious about modding. Never done it before. I just... filled a gap. Mind you, seriously surprised that a fandom that has at its base been going in fairly constant popularity since about the 13th century hasn't had those lj names snapped up yet. Hmmp. Suppose the RoS lot, who were the last major permutation of this fandom, and still going, tend to label themselves as RoS fans primarily, and thus snap up those permutations - see [livejournal.com profile] rosfic. (Prince of Thieves does not count, as it's more like one fic every blue moon on the asteroids of the moon of Eris, I think it's actually impossible to do more than giggle over Maid Marian and her Merry Men and Men in Tights, and we do not speak of the unclean thing that was filmed in the colonies.)

Another thought : Was flitting around a few people's sites, and looking at the date some fandom sites were last updated. Some of them, it's been *years*. I only kept my BtVS/Angel sites around a year or so after losing interest, and I'm pretty sure It's Been Emotional, pretty though it is, last gasp of nostalgia that it is, will be going the way of the dodo next time I get my ruthless streak going. Along with Adaptation, which never really got off the ground properly, and probably the fridge site. Christ, I may even start a new archive site for the new fandom, along the lines of Wraithbait, archiving the fic. Been a while since I did much web stuff, and it'd be interesting.

Just pondering, for the people who create stuff and then leave it up for years ([livejournal.com profile] taraljc, for example), any reason why? Nostalgia? Pretty? Lack of 'wanna smash!' compulsion?

Work do was... work do. I asked lots of questions, we found out what it is Marketing actually *does*, large amounts of people seem to have no idea what it is Production does, unless you're part of Editorial (we're Editorial Production. We liase.) and all seem to be fairly unaware that these are the people who control the end result, it was concluded that the entire company would like a detailed 'who does what' list so we a) don't have to make pathetic bleating noises when we have no idea who to ask, and b) stop Customer Services randomly forwarding queries to us on subjects we have no idea about whatsoever.

There was an art competition to draw an animal you felt represented the company, with two categories - best representation and best artistic, voted for with different coloured stars stuck on there at lunchtime. Turns out I'm one of the few people who can actually draw in the entire company aside from Trevor the designer and Tom in our group. And yes, I did draw a horse because it was one of the few things I could remember how to draw realistically from memory. 'Er... Freedom! Ahead of the pack!' James, looking over my shoulder : 'Guinness!' (the surfing advert). He does have a point. Trevor won artistic. :pout: Unfair advantage. Still, came out of the day with a plus : five extra bonus holiday days for entire company next year! Wheee!

*Finally* started Temeraire. Go away, glorying in the [livejournal.com profile] astolat prose. Also, the whole 'oh, this is *so* clearly converted M&C fanfic that got away from her' and spotting the bits.

The head cold rages onwards. What's this thing you call balance?
